VW Polo- Still The Small Car To Beat

A recent TV commercial for the Volkswagen Polo featured a singing terrier dog that was strutting around full of self-confidence whilst it was a passenger in the Polo but as soon as it left the car for different surroundings it became a nervous wreck. The closing caption of the commercial read “Polo Confidence.”      

I guess they were conveying the fact that the dog was unhappy when removed from its comfort zone. The same could be said for people too although maybe not to the same degree as the poor dog. Cars mean a lot to some people and they often feel immersed in their own little world listening to their favourite song and safe from harm.

This feeling can be hard to achieve in a small car but thanks to its solid build quality and good insulation VW appear to have managed it with the Polo.

For many years the Volkswagen Polo was the benchmark by which all small hatchbacks were measured. Today the competition has just about managed to catch up and if you are buying a new car the Polo doesn’t quite have it all its own way. From another perspective with twenty three years of production and in excess of half a million units sold, there are plenty of used examples to chose from with prices starting at just a couple of hundred pounds.

Today a budget of just £1,500 will be enough to get you a VW Polo with plenty of life in it. Introduced in September 1994, its looks were changed very little until February 2002 when the new “round-eyed” Polo hit the showrooms. These early cars do have some downsides. VW equipment levels were particularly sparse in the mid-1990s and only top spec CL models came with power-assisted steering as standard.

It’s also best to avoid the rather under powered 1 litre examples. They may be cheap to insure but in every other way they are well off the pace. The performance that you get from the 45bhp engine isn't great and the noise in the cabin is very loud due to the engine needing to always work hard.
A better bet is the 1.4 or 1.6 with 60bhp and 75bhp respectively, both of which also gained power-assisted steering as standard from October 1998.

Volkswagen reliability is legendary, but like most legends the truth can sometimes be different. The Polo scored badly in the J D Power customer satisfaction surveys of the late 1990s, being less highly ranked than the Ford Fiesta and even the Rover 600. Owners complained of problems with gearboxes, early failure of front discs and pads and even rust spots on door frames. These problems are not on every car but they should be checked for closely when buying a used example.

On the plus side the little Volkswagen does drive well. It has a more solid feel than many of its competitors and interior space is good. Minor switchgear has a reassuring quality feel about it, and if serviced correctly the engines rarely cause problems.

Buyers looking for the small car/ auto gearbox/ power steering combination will also find the Polo appealing. Both the 1.4 and 1.6 litre cars are available with a four-speed automatic box. It’s worth paying extra for the 1.6 as the 1.4’s lack of power can cause upshift problems from first to second gear.

In 2000 the VW Polo was given a facelift. The external changes made where small such as larger head lamps and a deeper front spoiler but the far bigger changes happened under the skin. Effectively a completely new model, these cars have a wider front track, giving improved handling, a fully galvanised body and antilock braking and power-assisted steering as standard.

At the same time the engine line up was changed and the 1.4 litre unit was boosted to 75bhp. Volkswagen introduced a new diesel three-cylinder engine as well.4 TDI, also found in the Audi A2 meaning the Polo at last had a diesel engine to rival the offerings from French rivals Peugeot and Renault. With 75bhp and bundles of torque, it runs a 1.4 petrol engine Polo close on acceleration and is still capable of more than 60mpg.

Whilst other manufacturers such as BMW with the Mini have come close, the Polo still sets the standards for small cars.

They are made rich, or kept rich, in two ways; first, by cultivation, which helps to change the raw plant food stored in the soil into available forms; and second, by manuring or adding plant food to the soil from outside sources.

"Sandy" in the sense here used, means a soil containing enough particles of sand so that water will pass through it without leaving it pasty and sticky a few days after a rain; "light" enough, as it is called, so that a handful, under ordinary conditions, will crumble and fall apart readily after being pressed in the hand. It is not necessary that the soil be sandy in appearance, but it should be friable.

"Loam: a rich, friable soil," says Webster. That hardly covers it, but it does describe it. It is soil in which the sand and clay are in proper proportions, so that neither greatly predominate, and usually dark in color, from cultivation and enrichment. Such a soil, even to the untrained eye, just naturally looks as if it would grow things. It is remarkable how quickly the whole physical appearance of a piece of well cultivated ground will change. An instance came under my notice last fall in one of my fields, where a strip containing an acre had been two years in onions, and a little piece jutting off from the middle of this had been prepared for them just one season. The rest had not received any extra manuring or cultivation. When the field was plowed up in the fall, all three sections were as distinctly noticeable as though separated by a fence. And I know that next spring's crop of rye, before it is plowed under, will show the lines of demarcation just as plainly.

Carnivorous Plants

If you want to add a unique touch to your garden, carnivorous plants are bound to get attention. There are several interesting exotic species to consider, such as the ever popular Venus Flytrap or the Cobra plant. There are five different types of carnivorous plants. Of course the most popular and more widely known are the plants from the Venus Flytrap plant family. The carnivorous Venus flytrap plant can snap its clamshell leaves around an insect in less than a second.

When a fly or insect walks on the surface, this activates a hair trigger and causes closure, as the traps closes it fills with an enzyme solution, and then it will dissolve the proteins from the insect. Digestion takes five to 12 days, after which the trap reopens, then the insect’s exoskeleton blows away in the wind or is washed away by rain.

Plants within the Venus Flytrap family have a large variety of different colored species found in various sizes.

Flypaper traps are among some of the coolest carnivorous plants. Finally, the lobster pot traps are among some of the most unusual looking carnivorous plants that you can acquire, they function by giving insects an easy way to enter, but little chance of escape.

In the case of the corkscrew plant, the insides of the plant have downward pointing obstructions and a y-shaped leaf structure that prevents the escape of its prey.

If you do not wish to have a true carnivorous plant in your garden, but would like something with similar characteristics, there are several related species you may want to consider. Some of these type of plants come from the Martyniaceae family, such as the Brocchinia Roridula. These plants lack one of the three required aspects, which is to attract, kill and digest prey, to be classified as a true carnivorous plant.

If you decided to plant or house any type of carnivorous plant, you will need to be sure to keep them out of reach from children. While most of them are relatively harmless to humans, digestion of these plants should be avoided, due to the digestive enzymes that the plant utilizes to break down prey.

The name Sloane Ranger was applied to the stereotypical young upper class English ladies seen in the area during this time. Another famous London department store is Selfridges in Oxford Street. Selfridges opened its doors to the public in 1909, and was built was the entrepreneur Gordon Selfridge. When it opened Selfridges set new standards for the retailing business. The reason being that each of the floors were designed so that the shopper was able to access the goods on sale more easily.

The shops in London are as diverse as its culture and no matter how bizarre ones shopping requirements, it can be found in London. Whether you like to shop in department stores or prefer to rummage through the markets, London has it all.

From The Ground Up Build A Garage

Building a custom garage takes a well thought out plan.  Because there are many components needed to build a garage, a well designed plan is a must.  Accurate measurements are another must before you start designing your plan.  Knowing the costs to build a garage and having all the necessary materials on hand is essential, so when the building starts, no stoppage takes place.

Consider the where and how big your garage will be, as the first step in your design. The size of the garage door will be a vital part of that decision.  Because you are going to have a custom garage plan, it is easier to construct the garage around the door, then trying to squeeze it in the plan later.  Next, find some local garage door stores and research what they have to offer.

Your custom plan should come together much easier by starting with the garage door.  Your cars determine the height and width of your garage door.  Once you have your garage door measurements, you are probably going to add some side room of at least a foot on either side.  In addition, you will need to add a minimum of a foot on top for headroom and at least 18 inches past the height of the door for proper operation.  Your basic outline for how to build a garage is complete.

Colors and other options for the walls, doors and floor are an important part of deciding how to build a garage. This gives you a very defined color palette to work with and will focus your design even more.

Collecting American Coins

Coin collecting is fascinating, and collecting American coins is an easy and entertaining hobby if you live in the United States. In most denominations there are some really interesting coins.

Pennies

Probably the most collected American coin is the Lincoln head penny. They have been minted since 1909. Some Lincoln head pennies were made out of zinc instead of copper during WWII. A very few were made of copper in 1943, and these are rare and valuable American coins.

Pennies had an Indian head on them before the Lincoln penny was minted. Another rare American coin are the indian head pennies.

Nickels

Nickels had a picture of the goddess Liberty on them, from 1883 to 1913. An extremely rare American coin, interestingly, is the 1913 liberty nickel. A mint employee made them illegally after hours and only five copies were made.

The buffalo nickel is the most classic American coin. It has a buffalo on one side and an Indian head on the other.

The nickel has had President Jefferson's portrait on it, since 1938. The mint started a "Westward Journey" series of nickels to commemorate Lewis and Clark's journey in 2004. So the Westward Journey nickels are destined to be collectible coins as they've tweaked Jefferson's portrait and the coins have different historical themes on the reverse side.

Dimes

Dimes are probably the most boring American coin. The design of dimes hasn't changed since 1945, the year after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt died. He suffered from polio and supported the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes helps people with birth defects now, but in Roosevelt's time it also helped children who had polio. Franklin's portrait has remained on our dimes since his death to memorialize his support of the March of Dimes. Dimes are a boring coin, but that is a great American coin story.

Quarters

Our favorite American coin, the quarter, had the Statue of Liberty on it until 1930. She was replaced by George Washington. Since 1999, the mint has been releasing the very collectible US State quarters, an American coin series that will be completed in 2008.

Half Dollars and Dollars

Half dollars used to be common, and until 1964 they had Ben Franklin on one side and the Liberty Bell on the other. President Kennedy's portrait went on the half dollar in 1964. Because Kennedy was beloved, and because the 1964 silver dollar was to be the last "real" silver dollar, people hoarded them and they became a treasured American coin. The mint released more of them than any other half dollar, because so many people collected the 1964 Kennedy half-dollars. Congress even froze the date, and 1964 half dollars were minted in 1965, too.

The Susan B. Anthony silver dollar is an interesting American coin as silver dollars are rare now. It is the only American coin with a woman's portrait on it, minted from 1979-1981.

Your Own Garage

If you are looking to do some thing to truly express yourself, you may want to consider how to build a garage. I am going to take a look at a couple examples to give you some ideas on what is possible when you build a garage that is your own. Both of these examples come from friends of mine that have redone their garages, so take a look and see if anything they did inspires you.

Two Examples Of How To Build A Garage That Is Fun

One of my friends is a huge fan of the Grateful Dead and decided to build a garage to store his van in the winter and hang out in. The cost to build a garage like this was a factor, but he was pretty open to spending some money. He then went about building a detached garage.

The first thing he needed to do was make sure that the garage would be comfortable in the winter, so he made sure to purchase an extra sturdy and insolated garage door. He took his extensive collection of cloth banners that he had collected and hung them throughout the garage. I would estimate he had approximately twenty of them and they took up most of the walls and ceiling. On the one side he parked his van that he used for summer tours back in the day.

All though every once in a while he still takes it for a spin or the occasional show, most of the time it just sat there. On the other side he set up comfortable couches and throw rugs. A massive steal your face was painted on the floor. The walls underneath the hung banners were painted tie dye. All of this created a really unique area and since it was the garage it was not something that he needed to show people. In addition, it could easily and quickly be converted to a normal garage with a couple gallons of paint and some time.

The next friend I have was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan and when he died he built a garage that is somewhat of a shrine. The first thing he did was paint a large red, black and white 3 on a black background on the garage floor.  He then, went about collecting as much Dale Earnhardt memorabilia as he could collect. He filled the garage over time with as much as he could.

On the one side he parks his vehicles and on the other he has a mechanics shop set up complete with a full hydraulic lift capable of picking up a loaded cargo van. He also has an extensive collection of tools here as well including air compressors and pretty much everything needed to do a full tear down and rebuild. He has done work on the side in the garage to fund this project and to help offset the cost of all the tools. His idea on how to build a garage is truly inspirational.

As you can see there are two very different approaches on how to build a garage into something that is unique and your own. Hopefully this helped to give you some ideas on what you can do.

On this type of safari travel the whole group travels together in the safari vehicles and they share their meals and the entire camp facility, and in some instances will even share larger, community types of tent accommodations.

A group camping safari is not only a good way to get to know others who share interests in adventuresome safari travels, but it is also a very effective way to reduce the cost of an African safari. This can make such a trip more affordable and feasible for people who might not otherwise be able to bear the expense of a private camping safari.

Some camping safaris take place at a permanent campground where the safari tour group will stay at a fixed "under canvas" camp. These are essentially tent "homes" that are primarily found in game reserves or at national parks. These camps have "permanent" tented sanitary facilities and a dining hall that is shared by all campers. These kind of camping facilities are popular and can serve as a base camp for walking safaris.

There are also mobile camping safaris which entail having the entire group traveling together with their all of their equipment and supplies in the safari travel vehicles. This gives the group an opportunity to cover greater distances and go deeper into the wilderness and gives the flexibility of stopping at sites that attract their interests. No matter what type of camping safari you choose, you will be sure to return home with memorable experiences emblazoned in your memory.

Invisible Fence: Right For You?

Don't you want to keep your dog safe? This is why many concerned dog lovers buy an Invisible Fence system.

Invisible Fence is an electronic pet containment system. An electrical wire is laid underground along the outside of an area. A special electronic collar is placed on the dog. When the dog approaches the perimeter, a warning beep sounds. This gives the dog the chance to back away from the perimeter. If the dog ignores the beeping, a mild electric shock is delivered via the electronic collar to the dog's neck.

This technique may sound cruel, but it's not. The shock is very mild, as the power comes from batteries in the dog's collar, not from the buried wire. It takes the dog by surprise. And the shock level is adjusted according to the size of the dog — smaller dogs get a much smaller shock.

Note that Invisible Fence, like all wireless pet containment systems, doesn't work its magic in a vacuum. The dog must be conditioned to run away from the perimeter when the warning beep occurs. Flags are placed along the boundary to act as visual cues during the training, which initially occurs with a leashed dog. The collar is also placed into training (no shock) mode.

To perform the conditioning, the owner approaches the perimeter with the dog. As soon as the dog passes the flags that mark the perimeter, the collar will start beeping. The owner immediately tugs on the leash and walks quickly away from the boundary, calling the dog's name. With lots of praise, the owner makes it a fun game for the dog.

Done over several training sessions, the dog learns to immediately leave the boundary area as soon as the beeping occurs. Eventually the training is done without a leash and with the collar in its normal mode. If the dog ignores the beeping, the first shock it receives is usually enough to cause it to heed the collar's warning the next time it approaches the perimeter.

All dogs do not need containment with an Invisible Fence system. But it works surprisingly well for those that do.
