Alicante - An Ideal Base For Touring

Since it's a gateway to the Costa Blanca, Alicante is a perfect base for touring. With a refreshing melange of ancient and modern day traditions and culture, Alicante is found within the popular tourist area of the Costa Blanca. Visitors to Alicante will enjoy sunny and warm climate, some of the finest beaches Spain has to offer as well as the most remarkable of Moorish architecture.

Situated on the Spanish coastline between the resorts of Elche and Benidorm, Alicante city sits below its mountain top castle. Alicante and the surrounding landscape are scattered with churches with the most recognised of them all being the Iglesia de Santa Maria. This is the oldest church in the city and was built between the 14th and 16th centuries with the church formerly being a mosque. The City's St Nicholas Cathedral was constructed in the seventeenth century to honour Alicante's patron saint and is thus one of the most important buildings for miles around.

Alicante has lots of ancient buildings to please historians and sightseers and can be found all around the area with columns and statues adding interest to many a once uninspiring site. Offering a keen eye over Alicante Bay, the Castillo de Santa Barbara is recognised as one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Easily accessed by road or by lift (elevator) from the Paseo Maritimo, the fortress has unsurpassed views of the amazing local area. Apart from the benefits the Castillo has to offer, Alicante has more ancient treasures including the Provincial Gallery, once the Gavina Palace, as well as its 19th century bull-ring. All of the Alicante sights are easily accessible using a rental car from Alicante Airport. Arranging your car rental online would be expected to produce big savings together with ensuring that your requested vehicle is ready and waiting when you arrive at the airport.

Alicante is the perfect place to come to enjoy your self and the main reason visitors return every year. With such a varied range of hotel rooms on offer, there are plenty of Alicante Hotels to suit all pockets and tastes. The beaches here have the most golden sand and offer a variety of both easy to get to and hidden bays perfect for private sunbathing. Head over to Albufereta Beach where there is excellent range of water sports. It is a peaceful spot that is generally unspoilt by the tourist masses.

The Playa del Postiguet offers the ideal place for an after dinner stroll. You will be joined by the locals along this enchanting seaside promenade - it's a ideal location for a romantic evening. Formerly known as the Port of Madrid, Alicante Harbour combines sailing with fishing and is the perfect place to come for the best fish restaurants around. Alicante harbour offers an excellent venue for activity night and day. This is where visitors come to eat superbly delicious, fresh seafood, learn to sail and finish the day off with a spot of clubbing into the small hours.

Nobody likes to party as much as the locals and visitors of Alicante! Here you will find a celebration of one type or another happening throughout the year, no matter when you decide to visit. One of the more sombre of Costa Blanca festivals is that of the Easter Procession. Wearing black and carrying candles, an effigy of Jesus is paraded on a cross around the streets. Every November, in remembrance of the Patron Saint Crist del Bon Encert, every town has an individual fiesta. Expect shops to be closed all day, every day as commerce grinds to a halt for this wonderful combination of dancing, singing and firework displays. On a less religious note, one of the most well known local festivals is that of the International Puppet Festival.
